TCARs Wild Ride! Visual Diagnosis and Evaluation of Child Maltreatment: A Trauma-Informed Approach

OAFP Scientific Assembly

This session presents four visually driven case studies illustrating key aspects of suspected child maltreatment and physical abuse. Attendees will learn to articulate a broad differential diagnosis for suspected maltreatment, distinguishing abusive injuries from medical mimics such as bleeding disorders and accidental trauma. Each case will include recommendations for appropriate radiologic and laboratory workups, along with discussion of varied outcomes. Each case will be unique and highlight different aspects of child maltreatment from cutaneous injury to abnormalities on spinal MRIs. The presentation emphasizes a systematic, trauma-informed approach to evaluation, including the critical role of multidisciplinary collaboration with law enforcement, child protective services, and forensic interviewers. Attendees will also gain insight into conducting thorough, compassionate assessments that minimize further psychological harm to the child and family. Given the emotional demands of this work, the session will also acknowledge the impact of trauma on healthcare professionals and promote a supportive, informed clinical practice. Designed for pediatricians, emergency physicians, family medicine providers, nurse practitioners, and other frontline clinicians, this session will enhance diagnostic confidence, promote early recognition, and support appropriate intervention for at-risk children.
