The Intersectionality of Being Black and Queer in Oklahoma
This presentation dives into the world of sexual orientation and gender identity (SOGI) and its connection to healthcare. We’ll begin by defining key terms like sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression. Next, we’ll explore the specific health disparities faced by lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ+) communities. These disparities can include higher rates of mental health conditions, certain cancers, and sexually transmitted infections. Social determinants of health, the social and economic factors impacting well-being, play a significant role. Discrimination, stigma, and lack of access to affirming healthcare can significantly influence the health of LGBTQ+ patients. Finally, we’ll discuss creating an inclusive healthcare environment. This includes recognizing the importance of respectful language, using a patient’s preferred name and pronouns, and demonstrating cultural competency when discussing SOGI. We’ll explore key components of providing equitable care, ensuring all patients feel safe, welcome, and receive the healthcare they deserve. Understanding these issues is crucial for providing effective care.
